Tight House Races Counting To Resolution

PA State House map

The two decisive Pennsylvania State House races that are outstanding and will decide the majority party in the chamber drew closer to resolution on Wednesday.

Democrat Missy Cerrato pulled ahead of incumbent Republican Todd Stephens by 34 votes in the 151st District race in Montgomery County. There are 59 provisional ballots to be resolved and the county Board of Elections will meet on Friday morning to adjudicate.

Boards are supposed to inform voters who cast a provisional ballot whether it counted or not within seven days after the election. Reasons the provisionals can be challenged and discarded include lack of signature from the voter, the judge of election, an incorrect date, or an attempt to cure an incorrect mail ballot with a provisional. It will be up to the three-member board made up of two Democrats and one Republican.

Republican Joe Hogan’s advantage over Democrat Mark Moffa in the 142nd District in Bucks County has shrunk to 54 votes. There are 47 votes being challenged, according to a county spokesperson, although there still may be outstanding provisional ballots as well. The Bucks County Board of Elections will meet on Tuesday morning to adjudicate.

Similar to Montgomery County, Bucks has two Democratic commissioners and one Republican.

Should Democrats win one of the two races, the party would assume the majority in the state House for the first time since 2010.

  1. Close races are actually really good for the democratic process. They stimulate discussion and get voters to pay attention to politics. The best story this cycle is the Congresswoman from Washington State who the great “530” gave a 2% chance of winning who actually won. Rep. Elect Marie Gluesencamp Perez won a staggering upset in Washinton’s 3rd Congressional District against a far better funded Republican candidate with all the pundits wrote her candidacy off giving her 2% chance to win. Amazing story about perseverance.
