Toomey Makes Fundraising Appeal on Behalf of Texas Senate Candidate

By Ben Hulac and John McDonald, Contributing Writers

United States Senator Pat Toomey on Monday made a fundraising appeal on behalf of Ted Cruz, a Tea Party-backed candidate for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination in Texas.

In an email to supporters that decried the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as “a textbook example of this Administration’s wasteful spending and over regulation,” the Keystone State’s junior senator emphasized the importance of winning GOP control of the Senate before urging supporters to support Cruz’s candidacy.

“Ted is the type of strong conservative leader that we need in Washington.  He will work with me and my Republican colleagues to repeal Obamacare and restore fiscal responsibility to our government.
Help send a true conservative to Washington to help defeat President Obama’s liberal agenda,” Toomey writes in the email.

Last August, Toomey joined GOP Senate colleagues Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Mike Lee of Utah, and Rand Paul of Kentucky in endorsing Cruz’s campaign to fill the senate vacancy left after Kay Bailey Hutchison announced that she would not seek reelection.

Toomey’s continuing support for Cruz, who has been endorsed by the Tea Party Express, comes as no surprise.  In November, the New York Times’ Kate Zernike deemed Cruz “the darling of conservative leaders looking to reinforce the rightward shift of the Republican Party.”

Though Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst has long been (and remains) the frontrunner for the GOP nod, Cruz has been making inroads of late – including in a recent University of Texas and Texas Tribune survey that shows an 11-point gap between the candidates.

Cruz is currently a partner at the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and heads the group’s U.S. Supreme Court and national Appellate Litigation practice.
