Trump Blasts “RINO” Toomey Over Commutation Criticism

President Donald Trump took a jab at Sen. Pat Toomey in a tweet on Saturday night, dubbing the highest ranking Republican in Pennsylvania a Republican in Name Only.

“Do RINO’S Pat Toomey & Mitt Romney have any problem with the fact that we caught Obama, Biden, & Company illegally spying on my campaign? Do they care if Comey, McCabe, Page & her lover, Peter S, the whole group, ran rampant, wild & unchecked – lying & leaking all the way? NO!,” Trump wrote in a tweet on late Saturday night.

Earlier on Saturday, Toomey made a public statement criticizing the president’s decision to commute Roger Stone’s sentence.

Toomey described Stone’s commutation as a “mistake,” even though the president has the “legal and constitutional authority to grant clemency for federal crimes.”

“The president clearly has the legal and constitutional authority to grant clemency for federal crimes. However, this authority should be used judiciously and very rarely by any president,” Toomey said in a statement. “While I understand the frustration with the badly flawed Russia-collusion investigation, in my view, commuting Roger Stone’s sentence is a mistake.”

“He was duly convicted of lying to Congress, witness tampering, and obstructing a congressional investigation conducted by a Republican-led committee,” Toomey continued. “Earlier this week Attorney General Bill Barr stated he thought Mr. Stone’s prosecution was ‘righteous’ and ‘appropriate’ and the sentence he received was ‘fair.’ Any objections to Mr. Stone’s conviction and trial should be resolved through the appeals process.”

Ironically, Toomey’s rise to statewide prominence came in 2004, when the then-Congressman challenged Sen. Arlen Specter from the right. He later led the Club for Growth, a PAC that targeted Republicans it deemed insufficiently conservative.

Toomey hasn’t issued a public statement responding to Trump’s charge of being a “RINO.”

Stone’s commutation was announced just days before he was set to report to federal prison after being convicted of several federal charges, including “lying to Congress, witness tampering, and more as part of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.”

Toomey is the lone Pennsylvania Republican in Congress to issue a public statement regarding Stone’s commutation.

While Toomey is facing heat from Trump over his criticism of the commutation, Democrats in Pennsylvania are also hitting the GOP Senator over his response from the left.

“Congrats to @SenToomey for being even less bold and courageous than Susan Collins. Now that is quite the feat!,” Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Philadelphia) wrote in a tweet on Saturday night, prior to Trump hitting Toomey in his tweet.

  1. Don’t worry Senator Toomey. Your voting record says it all. Your constitutes in the Commonwealth know that you are a Republican.

  2. Toomey is self-serving prick, and a total p*ssy when it comes to leveling any real criticism at Trump. Toomey cares about keeping the top 1% from paying their fair share of taxes, keeping women from controlling their bodies, and pushing his religious views. Toomey doesn’t care about Trump sucking up to Russia, China, N. Korea, or any other authoritarian governments. Toomey cares about keeping his rich donors happy.
