Turzai, Evans to Face Off Over Liquor Stores

By Nicole Houck, Contributing Writer
The Patriot-News Editorial Page will be hosting a forum on the selling of state liquor stores on Monday, April 11, at 11 a.m. The forum will occur at Harrisburg University, 326 Market street. It will feature debate between House Majority Leader Mike Turzai and Representative Dwight Evans over whether privatization of state stores is appropriate.

Turzai supports privatization of liquor stores. He has previously introduced legislation that pushes to sell state stores to private owners. The legislation would auction off around 100 stores to the highest responsible bidder.

“Government should not be in the business of selling alcohol,” Turzai said.  “Pennsylvania has an antiquated system that results in higher prices and less selection for consumers.  It is time to update the way wine and spirits are sold in this state.  My legislation privatizes the wholesale and retail operations to bring greater competition which will lead to lower prices and better selection.”

Evans is extremely opposed to the idea, which should heat things up quite a bit.

This forum is part of a new community forum project that the Patriot-News is launching called The Big Story series. Seating at the event will be limited to 125. Anyone interested in attending should email thebigstory@pnco.com.
