Turzai Named General Counsel of Peoples Gas

His next chapter.

Former Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny), who resigned from office on Monday after serving nearly two decades in the state House, has been named general counsel of Peoples Gas, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times

“As general counsel for Peoples, he will be one of the key leaders of our natural gas business that plays a critical role in the everyday lives of families and individuals in more than 760,000 homes and businesses,” said Christopher Luning, EVP, general counsel and secretary of Essential Utilities Inc. (NYSE: WTRG), the Bryn Mawr-based parent company of Peoples that also owns Aqua America. “Caring for those families and individuals we serve and the more than 1,500 Peoples employees that ensure the safe and reliable delivery of our natural gas, will be the cornerstones of his leadership.”

Turzai, who was first elected to the state House in a special election in 2001, and served as Speaker from 2015 until yesterday, announced in January that he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2020. Shortly after he announced that he wouldn’t seek another term, speculation began about his next move after public office and Peoples Gas was one of the rumored places that he’d land at. Spotlight PA reported that the company, formerly known as Aqua America Inc., is a major Turzai donor whose CEO, Chris Franklin, is a close friend of the lawmaker.”

Turzai’s most recent reelection bid in 2018 was his closest race since serving as Speaker when he bested Democrat Emily Skopov by 9 points for the 28th House District.

Republican Robert Mercuri, who was endorsed by Turzai, will face Skopov in the general election for the seat.

  1. He just went from salesman to buyer. He should do better now since the Pa. legislature has been for sale forever.

  2. Wow, the GOP is a joke. They don’t event pretend to care about people anymore.

  3. What worries me as a life long Pennsylvanian is that this means, once more, alternative energy sources in Pa will get tossed aside like a tackling dummy at a football practice. The Republican Party in the Senate and House in Pa seems wedded to the same old same old energy sources and Pennsylvanians remain puzzled why we cannot even consider alternative energy sources. Forget the Dem State Senate leadership as they forever find themselves in the minority but it seems a mystery why our state can’t tax fracking and why we can’t move aggressively to alternate energy sources.

  4. TurdsEye gets his payoff for PA being the only State that does not tax extraction of oil and gas. Cushy job having lunch and dinners with his old GOP buddies to lobby them for whatever Peoples Gas wants.

  5. “general counsel” ?? as in “legal counsel” ?? as in “someone who’s supposed to know more than a 1st year law student”?

I’ve got the strong impression that Turd’s Eye doesn’t know jack-shit about “the law”, but rather, his skill was using the GOP majority to pass legislation to suppress voter rights and reward political donors.

If “Peoples Gas” is actually going to rely upon him for legal work (instead of lobbying his colleagues and figuring out the size of bribes).. then they are going to lose a lot of court cases.

  6. Of course. He should also find the nearest gas well, pitch a tent and stay there. Take a deep breath and suck up all the fumes. Put it on display.
