The week that was the first full week of March and the last week of Standard Time. A week that saw court activity, poll releases, petition submissions, ad spending and lots of news on beverage fronts. Our ups and downs for March 11.

Josh Shapiro. An unforced error for the probable Democratic nominee for Governor. Two of six LGBTQ activists who spoke at a Shapiro event said later they thought they were attending a meeting with the attorney general to discuss legislation that would extend nondiscrimination protections to LGBTQ Pennsylvanians. The topic was raised, but the event focused on getting an endorsement for the Shapiro-Austin Davis ticket. Local organizers of the event were accused of misleading people regarding the event.

Candidates With Petitions Submitted. There are 26 statewide candidates who are sleeping better tonight, knowing that their nomination petitions have been filed with the Department of State. Senate (6): Kenyatta, Lamb, Bartos, Barnette, Oz, Sands. Governor (3): Mastriano, Barletta, White. Lt. Governor (5): Sims, Schillinger, Daniels, Saccone, Delrosso. Congress (12): Ehasz (D-1), Hunt (D-3), Dean (D-4), Scanlon (D-5), Galluch (R-5), Houlahan (D-6), Dellicker (R-7), Bognet (R-8), Irwin (R-12), Joyce (R-13), Reschenthaler (R-14), Thompson (R-15).

Candidates Without Petitions Filed. Those who have not filed their petitions with the DOS are facing a Wednesday, 5 p.m. deadline to submit them. Governor candidates need 2,000 signatures and a minimum of 100 in at least 10 different counties. For Lieutenant Governor, those numbers drop to 1,000 and five counties. U.S. Senate candidates are also charged with securing 2,000 signatures but with no stipulation on where they can be collected. For the U.S. Congress, they need 1,000 signatures from within their district. This weekend is an important time and the weather does not look to cooperate.

Pennsylvania Media Markets. Medium Buying is reporting that TV/radio ad spending in the GOP Senate primary – including future spending – has now reached more than $34.39 million. And there are still 67 days until Election Day.

Supply Shortages. The Commonwealth has suffered through a number of shortages, but this one hits even closer to home. Girl Scout cookies are currently facing production issues, which means cookies that should have been in plentiful supply for booth sales are now hard to find. Transportation and supply chain issues have affected Little Brownie Bakers, one of the two bakeries licensed to make Girl Scout cookies, who supplies cookies to approximately 75 of 111 Councils across the country.

Ed Maier. The 72-year-old repurchased his great-great-grandfather’s Stegmaier brand from the Lion Brewery 165 years after his great-great-grandfather Charles Stegmaier and his father-in-law George Baer founded the Baer and Stegmaier Brewing Co. of Wilkes-Barre in 1857. He closed Stegmaier Brewing Co. in 1974 and sold the labels to Wilkes-Barre’s Lion Brewery. “The legacies of Charles Stegmaier and the Stegmaier Brewing Co. are back in the family’s hands.”

Margaret Bayuk. The 74-year-old Slovakian immigrant is the sole proprietor of Ustianochka Vodka, distilled and bottled in Russia. It is also exclusively sold in Pennsylvania. Now that the Keystone State is boycotting Russian products, Bayuk is stuck with 30,000 bottles of vodka and nowhere to sell it. She has asked Gov. Tom Wolf for relief but to date has not received a response.

Pennsylvania. Perhaps a surprise at the top of the list, Pennsylvania holds the title as the state that drinks the most on St. Patrick’s Day. With an average of 4.26 drinks consumed per person, it sits right above Minnesota (4.19) and Mississippi (4.16). Fourth place was earned by Missouri (4.07), the home of Anheuser-Busch, America’s largest brewer of beer. Indiana, with its aptly named state song, “Back Home Again in Indiana,” earned the unfortunate title of state whose residents are most likely to drink alone at home (21.0%) on St. Patrick’s Day. Pennsylvania, finished second with 18.6% of people celebrating in solitude.

Ilsinho. One of the most popular players in Philadelphia Union history has announced his retirement and will be honored by the club on Saturday. The 36-year-old Brazilian forged a reputation for being a super sub during his six years with the Union. Ilsinho had 22 goals and 20 assists in 130 career regular-season matches.
