The hazy, lazy days of summer are upon us for some … while others are keeping the pedal to the metal in their quest to earn the vote of the Pennsylvania electorate. Who had a good week? Who had a not-so-good week?

Here are our Ups and Downs for the week ending July 22.

Wilkes University. The city and campus was preparing for a presidential visit when word came that Joe Biden had contracted the COVID-19 virus. With the importance of Luzerne County in the upcoming midterms, the University may want to keep its plans close by for an upcoming visit.

Josh Slaby. The 9-year-old Lehighton boy had hoped to present President Joe Biden with a map of Pennsylvania, showing that he had visited all 67 county seats in the Commonwealth with his mother since 2020. “I would have said, ‘Nice to meet you. My name is Josh Slaby and can you sign this?’” Here’s hoping that Josh gets his map signed soon.

ActBlue. The Democratic Party’s online fundraising platform for small dollar donors raised $513 million between April 1 and June 30, including $20.6 million on the day that the Supreme Court announced its decision on Roe v. Wade. By comparison, WinRed, the Republican online fundraising counterpart, processed $155.8 million in the second quarter of 2022.

Madeleine Dean. The 4th District congresswoman from Berks and Montgomery Counties was arrested along with 16 other members of Congress after they failed to follow three warnings to stop blocking First Street NE near the Supreme Court during an abortion rights demonstration.

Mehmet Oz. The Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate blamed Democratic enthusiasm on issues such as reproductive rights and gun reform for his disappointing fundraising total in the second quarter of the year.

Rich Fitzgerald. Allegheny County Council voted to override Fitzgerald’s veto of a bill to ban fracking in county parks. It is the first time that the Council has been successful in overriding the county executive’s opposition to a bill in his three terms.

Meidas Touch. The pro-democracy, next-generation super PAC founded by three siblings (and lifelong Democrats) delivered a 2:23 video, opposing the candidacy of Mehmet Oz for Senate, that needs to be seen to be appreciated.

Doug Mastriano. The GOP candidate for governor is getting the attention of some Democrats who believe that the general election will be tighter than most think. Or as one consultant pined, “this is not going to be a walk in the park.”

John Fetterman. The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate returned to the campaign trail on Thursday, albeit at private fundraising events. Attendees said the candidate appeared healthy and in good spirits, while acknowledging that he has not yet fully recovered.

Penn State. In a case involving the “Penn State” trademark on merchandise, Justice Matthew W. Brann held that a symbol or phrase does not serve as a trademark if it “merely creates an association between it and the trademark holder.” The court denied a PSU motion to dismiss holding that the school had to prove consumers view “Penn State” and the lion as identifying the source of the product and not just as “ornamental.” “The modern collegiate trademark- and licensing-regime has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry. But that a house is large is of little matter if it’s been built on sand.”

Mega Millions. The lottery has not had a winner in three months covering 27 consecutive drawings, leading to tonight’s jackpot of over $660 million. That also has a cash option of $388 million. All you have to do to match all six numbers. Only one Pennsylvanian has ever cashed in on one of the top nine jackpots of all time, winning $516 million in May, 2021.
