Wolf Raised $2.5M in 2016, has $1.7M on Hand

Tom-Wolf1Governor Tom Wolf will start the two year battle for a second term with $1.7 million in his war chest.

Wolf’s campaign raised $2.5 million in 2016, and spent $1.4 million.  Most of that went to the Pa. Democratic Party: over $675,000. The Pennsylvania Future PAC got $100,000.

Wolf’s largest donors were labor unions, who gave a more than a combined $730,000 to his campaign. Other donations came from the typical array of incumbent-friendly businesses, trade associations and advocacy groups. Congressman Dwight Evans (D-Phila), a longtime Wolf ally, gave $26,000.

Fundraising reports are a useful snapshot of a candidate’s strength, but Wolf has an advantage beyond their scope as an independently wealth businessman. For example, he contributed $10 million to jumpstart his campaign in 2014.

  1. It’s very early in the game. IMHO we’ll see things shaping up in March or April 2018. Meanwhile, some considerations:

It will be interesting to see what happens in the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial elections. If the Democrats lose the governorship, it might be a strong encouragement to Republicans to go for Pennsylvania’s governorship in 2018. And Wagner is likely to be a formidable candidate, and get strong Republican party funding.

Wolf is still trying to find things to do, just to have a few items on his record when the taxpayers/voters ask “What have you done for us lately?” Look for him to work hard on issues, including bipartisan ones, in 2017 and 2018 where he can just claim to have done something worth getting him re-elected.

  2. Wagner gave himself a loan. SAD! LOSER!

Ain’t nobody got that Tom Wolf money because that Tom Wolf money don’t stop.

In all seriousness though, in terms of money, Wagner brings a knife to a bazooka fight.
