Wozniak Scores: PSU-Pitt Rivalry Renewed

By David Grim, Contributing Writer

Today, more than a decade since the two NCAA Division I football programs last met, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Pittsburgh have agreed to renew their storied rivalry during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. PA Senator John Wozniak (D-Cambria) is deservedly applauding the news.

“I commend leaders from both schools for taking this decisive step toward renewing the game,” Wozniak said.

Since the discontinuation of the rivalry in 2000, Senator Wozniak has continually pressured the presidents and athletic directors of both schools to resume the tradition. Last year, in an attempt to mediate discussion, Wozniak invited representatives from both universities to his local office in Johnstown to discuss the proposition. Upon conclusion of the meeting, both universities promised Wozniak to work together in an effort to advance negotiations.

Although he is pleased with the decision to resume the historic rivalry, Wozniak stated, “While games have been scheduled for 2016 and 2017, I am hopeful the schools will continue to work toward permanently resuming the rivalry.”

Wozniak continued to express his support for the game by stating, “It was great exposure for both schools, an economic plus for both regions of Pennsylvania and a lot of fun for fans of both schools.”

The Pittsburgh Panthers will host the Penn State Nittany Lions at Heinz Field on September 10, 2016. Reciprocally, the Nittany Lions will host the Panthers at Beaver Stadium in State College on September 16, 2017.

PSU leads the rivalry 50-42-4, but Pitt won their last meeting 12-0.
