Young Democrats to Hold National Conference in Phila

Philadelphia is hosting the Young Democrats' National Summer Conference.

Although it’s yet to be seen how strongly young voters will be in Obama’s corner this election cycle, Pennsylvania Young Democrats have something to be excited about: the National Conference is coming to Philadelphia this weekend.

The conference will be held at the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel. The usual business — of training new members, caucusing and electing a national committeeman and -woman to represent them at the DNC — is planned.

But the weekend is also packed full with guest speakers and a veritable who’s-who of PA politics.

Friday is to feature keynote speakers: AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale, as well as Reps. Bob Brady (D-Phila), Chaka Fattah (D-Phila) and Allyson Schwartz (D-Montco). State Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montco) and State Chair Jim Burn are also slated to speak.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is to speak Saturday, with former Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Bucks) wrapping up the weekend Sunday.

PA Young Democrats President Anthony Youngblood said that he is excited for the conference to be coming to Philadelphia, but also stressed the state’s importance for November.

“Pennsylvania is paramount to President Obama’s re-election campaign and energizing the youth vote will be key to victory,” he said.

“Young Democrats from across the nation will be treated to a great lineup of speakers while also having the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of social events and training sessions — all of which will make this a fun and productive weekend.
