Governor Forum at Temple Draws Five Candidates

debateThe first major campaign event of the Democratic primary is scheduled for Saturday.

The debate will be held at Temple University, and sponsored by a cohort of unions and progressive groups. Entitled “Philadelphia Speaks Out: Gubernatorial Candidates Forum,” it brings together five of the eight declared candidates to discuss education, jobs, health care, retirement security and other issues.

As reported by the Inquirer, DEP Secretary John Hanger, State Treasurer Rob McCord, DEP Secretary Katie McGinty, Rep. Allyson Schwartz and former revenue Secretary Tom Wolf are all confirmed to attend.

It is uncertain whether Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz and Cumberland County Minister Max Myers were invited. Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski received an invitation yesterday but is unavailable.

Governor Corbett was invited but is unable to attend.

The sponsors for the event include unions and several liberal activist groups: 1199C/AFSCME, 32BJ SEIU, AFSCME DC 47, Action United, Fight for Philly, PA Working Families, PASNAP, PCAPS, POWER and SEIU Healthcare PA.

The premise of the forum is to put working class families in the forefront of the 2014 election.

“Nearly 40% of the state’s registered voters live in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties, underscoring the importance of local voters and issues in the 2014 election,” the media advisory from SEIU 32BJ said. “On Saturday, Philadelphians will get an early opportunity to hear from the candidates on the issues that matter to working families.”

The event will run from 4pm-6pm, and is free to the public. For those who can’t attend, it will also be streamed live online.

  1. John Hanger’s endorsement from PA Conservation Voters is good news for PA. He and Wolf also support single payer. Schwartz is too tied into big pharma/insurance companies and polluters to come clean on any of these subjects, except to repeat tired-old aphorisms and rehearsed rhetoric! Should be interesting!

  2. That’s a good draw for the unions — all four of what I would consider the top tier candidates. I’d put Schwartz and McGinty there because of polling data, McCord because of institutional support, and Wolf because of money.

Good job for Hanger getting into this debate as well. Should be good exposure for him, and he’ll hold the others honest from the left flank. No idea what Pawlowski is thinking taking a pass.

And of course Corbett isn’t coming. There might be some non-Republicans in the crowd!
