Leach Responds to Corbett’s Medical Marijuana Comments

Daylin-Leach-portrait-2013-loresState Senator Daylin Leach responded today to Governor Corbett’s recent comments about medical marijuana. On Wednesday, the Governor’s spokesman told the Patriot-News that he would re-consider his stance on medical marijuana if the FDA would approve its use.

“If in fact the FDA does deem there are appropriate and medical uses, that is something that the governor would obviously take into consideration,” the Governor’s spokesman Jay Pagni told Robert Vickers of the Patriot-News.

“He’d be open to direction and the FDA is the agency for that direction. It’s the one body that would determine if [medical marijuana] is appropriate, if it does have a beneficial use, and he would look to the experts on that.”

Daylin Leach, a candidate for the Democratic nomination in Pennsylvania’s 13th Congressional District and a legislator who has introduced two bills in the State Senate to legalize medical marijuana, questioned the Governor’s statement and called on him to take action on his own.

“By outsourcing the treatment of sick children to the FDA, he’s ignoring the fierce urgency of now to get these kids the medicine they need,” Leach said. “Meanwhile, as Pennsylvania ignores this critical problem, 21 other states have already taken decisive action to care for their own sick children.”

Leach also said the Governor’s decision to defer to the FDA contradicts his previously expressed views on state’s rights.

“Why, now, is he deferring to the federal government and resisting action? Simply because he wishes to appear compassionate by making empty statements rather than actually being compassionate,” Leach asked.

Leach is running for the Democratic nomination in PA-13. Other candidates include physician/activist Val Arkoosh, State Rep. Brendan Boyle, and former Rep. Marjorie Margolies.

  1. THIS IDIOT GOVERNOR IS A LIAR HE SAID THAT THIS MAGIC HERB DONT HAVE ANY MEDICAL BENEFITS HES LYING AND HE KNOWS IT READ THE FACTS ABOUT THE GOOD THIS MAGIC HERB DOES TO HELP PEOPLE AND CHILDREN WHO ARE IN PAIN AND HAVE SEIZURES OR ARE YOU TO STUPID TO READ THE FACTS ABOUT THIS MAGIC HERB IF ONE OF YOUR KIDS OR GRANDKIDS WAS SICK AND THIS MAGIC HERB WOULD HELP THEM LIVE A BETTER LIFE YOU WOULD LEGALIZE THIS MAGIC HERB IN A HEART BEAT AND JUST TO LET YOU KNOW YOU WONT GET MY VOTE AND THE SOONER YOU PACK YOUR BAGS THE BETTER

  2. I support the legalization of Medical Marijuana in Pennsylvania, and let me assure you my vote for Governor will reflect it. Since when is it up to a politician to decide what treatment is good for me? Only my doctor and I can decide that. We the terminally ill have the right to choose what form of medication is best for us. I will choose the natural NON-TOXIC medication found in Marijuana over Toxic chemo, addictive pills etc. every time! The Lehigh Valley is my home, I should not have to move to another state to find a medication that works for me.

  3. Tom Corbett, is a hate mongering adulteration to the Declaration of Independence and the Bil of Rights. at no point is it okay to make the police carry out acts of Domestic Terrorism in order to proxy rape your body via drugs denied or forced and/or dictating the definition of marriage as not the deep connection of feelings, but instead ” insert religious extremist rhetoric, in violation of separation of church and state freedom of/and from religion” you Governor are just as much of a sick fucktard as the CIA crashing 4 tons of cocaine, I tried to give you a chance but it fell on deaf ears as always, but to be honest I would rather break bread with a fictional terrorist faction that watch one like you rape people.

  4. I don’t quite understand Corbett’s logic. He supports making alcohol more readily available to adults but refuses to consider allowing suffering children access to a non-psychoactive strain of cannabis. I support all forms of cannabis legalization but hemp and the non-psychoactive strain that has helped with child seizures should be a no-brainer.

  5. I agree. This statement indicates that Gov Corbett is trying to hedge his bets with Pa voters. If/When the FDA gives it approval only an idiot would not go with it. He see’s the writing on the wall. His reelection chances are slim even without the cannabis issue. He has just been a horrible Gov. As a long time republican I’m considering changing parties just to vote for John Hanger in the Dem Primary. Corbett is an embarrassment to Pa. The sooner he goes the better!!!

  6. Cheryl- where was this that you spoke to the governor? The guy is as hard to find available in public as big foot.

Was this a letter you wrote and received a response to? I’m sure (if your telling the truth) the dems would love that letter to throw at him and call him out on.

  7. Corbett’s way of thinking is still back in the 1930’s. He obviously learned everything he needs to know about marijuana from watching Reefer Madness. I truly believe the only way he’d change his mind is if we produced something with bright lights and moving pictures. He’s a dinosaur. If he can’t progress his way of thinking how, then, can we in PA expect any progress? He’s only softening his stance because he knows he is in deep when it comes to the 2014 elections. By deferring to the FDA, he hopes to say “look I’m doing it. It’s the FDA that’s taking so long.” There are things on the FDA’s things to do list from a decade ago. Not good enough Mr. Corbett. Pack your bags and get out.

  8. I too asked gov. corbett about medical marijuana several months ago. He told me that there was no proof that marijuana was medically beneficial to anyone and then he said that marijuana was a proven “gateway” drug. This man is incompetent, ignorant, and a liar. He panders to the wealthy regardless of any danger to ordinary citizens. Let’s get him out of office ASAP!
