PA-13: Arkoosh Endorsed by AFSCME District Council 47

Val-Arkoosh-portrait1With a week left to go before the primary, physician Val Arkoosh announced today that she has been endorsed by the AFSCME District Council 47.

The AFSCME DC 47 consists of 3,500 members who work in the non-profit, higher education and government sectors in Philadelphia. The AFSCME stands for the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees.

“AFSCME DC 47 has endorsed Val Arkoosh for Congress in the 13th District because we know, from her work getting healthcare reform passed in Washington and her long career serving women and working families in Philadelphia’s hospitals, that she is the candidate who is best able to address the needs of working people,” said Vanessa Fields, Vice President of AFSCME District Council 47.

“AFSCME and I worked closely together here in Pennsylvania and in Washington pushing for affordable, quality health care for all,” Arkoosh responded. “I’m honored that AFSCME DC 47 is supporting my campaign as a continuation of that work, and I’m looking forward to working with them in Congress to broaden economic prosperity for working families.”

Other Democratic candidates in the PA-13 contest include State Rep. Brendan Boyle, State Sen. Daylin Leach and former Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies.

  1. I would love to hear the argument for Brendan Boyle being part of a machine. He is an Irish Catholic, coming from a modest background, who worked hard, got a good education, and ran several times against a very popular incumbent until he finally achieved his goal of putting himself in a position to influence policy and make change. No where do I see what can something that can be defined as “political machine”.

This is further exemplified by contributors he has, and the type of campaign that he runs.

  2. Remember a few years back in New Jersey when Rob Andrews ran for Governor and his wife was nominated in the primary to run for his Congressional seat? And then, when he lost the governor primary, his wife stepped aside so he could keep his job in DC? Is it far-fetched to see Val Arkoosh playing this role for Allyson Schwartz? Is a vote for Arkoosh in the PA-13 primary really just the same as saying “May the Schwartz be with you”?

  3. Excellent endorsement for Arkoosh. Boyle is part of a machine (so is Margolies). This endorsement is coming from a group who doesn’t follow the herd and sees past what someone tells them to do. She’s fantastic! I’m really excited about the prospects of her in Congress.

  4. DC 47 is the white collar union. I imagine they are overrepresented in the 13th portion of Philly. This is a good get for Val.

  5. What? How did Boyle not get this?

Val really is the Tom Wolf of the 13th- surging at just the right moment.
