Brookline Recreation Center expands fitness opportunities

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, State Senator Wayne Fontana, and community leaders gathered today to celebrate the opening of a new fitness facility located on the lower level of the Brookline Recreation Center.

“The Brookline Recreation Center remains a true keystone of this community and we’re proud to expand its program offerings by opening this new fitness center,” said Ravenstahl.  “For decades, residents have enjoyed a wide variety of health and fitness activities at this complex. This ADA-accessible fitness center will offer new opportunities for weightlifting, cardio-vascular exercise, and related classes.”

The renovation project, representing an investment of more than $400,000, was funded by Citiparks, the Department of Public Works and a grant from Sen. Fontana.  The five-month renovation included a new HVAC system that provides air conditioning for the two-story facility.

“I am proud to have partnered with Mayor Ravenstahl and the City’s Parks Department and Public Works so I could secure State funds to help construct this exercise facility in my district,” said Senator Fontana. “I expect those who take advantage of this facility will enjoy their time here and more importantly, experience a healthier lifestyle.”

The construction project, which began in June 2010, included removing interior walls to create one larger space for the fitness center, which is divided into three areas as a weight room, cardio room and stretching area.  Future plans for the Brookline Recreation Center include adding an outdoor walking track around the facility
