Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

On Tuesday, there is a special election that will determine the majority in the Pennsylvania state House.

Since 2023, there have been 10 special elections to fill seats in Harrisburg and with Democrats holding the slightest of majorities over Republicans in the chamber, each one took on added importance.

Even if the numbers didn’t indicate that the election should.

Allegheny County’s 35th Legislative District will go to the polls on March 25 to determine if Democrat Dan Goughnour, Republican Chuck Davis,or Libertarian Adam Kitta will fill out the term of late Rep. Matt Gergely, who passed away in January.

Democrats need a Goughnour victory to maintain their one-seat majority in the House, while Republicans are hoping against hope that support of the Trump Administration and agenda can offset their voter registration disadvantage in the Mon Valley.

The District, which consists of the cities of Clairton, Duquesne and McKeesport and the township of South Versailles and the boroughs of Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, Munhall, Port Vue, Versailles, West Homestead, West Mifflin, Whitaker and White Oak, has 26,115 Democrats to only 10,683 Republicans among its more than 48,000 registered voters.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris won the district over President Trump by 16 points and Gergely won his special election in 2023 with 75 percent of the vote.

Goughnour, 39, has served in law enforcement for nearly 20 years, including 16 years with the McKeesport Police Department. He currently serves as Captain of Detectives.

A board member in the McKeesport School District, Goughnour worked closely with the late representative, as Gergely served as business manager for the school district and McKeesport city administrator.

His priorities include strengthening public safety by providing funding for firefighters, police and first responders; boosting job training programs; supporting public schools; and reducing the cost of everyday essentials.

Davis, 66, is a fire chief who also doubles as president of the White Oak Borough Council.

He hopes to lower taxes, expand Pennsylvania’s energy resources, protect jobs and communities, and support first responders.

Kitta serves as the assistant director for The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Department, overseeing its 28-county operation.

He has called his platform “community and individual-focused” and hopes to provide ideas for gaining education, job training and new business opportunities in the district; and reforming the criminal justice system to benefit both public safety and individuals.”
