A former Pennsylvania Congressman is reportedly being considered to serve as one of the service secretaries.
According to Politico’s Morning Defense newsletter, former Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-Bucks) is being considered to serve as the Secretary of the Army.
Murphy, who represented Pennsylvania’s old 8th Congressional District that encompassed Bucks County and parts of Philadelphia from 2007-2011, was the first Iraq War veteran elected to Congress. During his tenure in elected office, Murphy served on the House Armed Service, Select Intelligence, and Appropriations Committee. Murphy is also credited for being a leader in the effort to overturn the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law.
After serving in Congress, Murphy was the under secretary of the Army under President Barack Obama.
After Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, the Military Times and CNN reported that Murphy was being considered to serve as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the incoming-Biden administration. However, Biden appointed former White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough to serve in that role.
On Friday, Lloyd Austin was confirmed as the new Secretary of Defense. Politico reported on Friday morning that Biden didn’t intend to nominate the civilian service secretaries until after Austin was confirmed.
