It’s been said that politics makes strange bedfellows.

Add Lisa Scheller and Dean Browning to the list.

Scheller defeated Browning, the former Lehigh County Commissioner, for the 2020 Republican nomination to challenge Rep. Susan Wild (D-Lehigh) for the 7th Congressional District seat in the U.S House. She won by 2,400 votes in that race, but lost to Wild in the general election and then again in the 2022 rematch between the two. And Scheller believes she knows why she fell just 5,000 votes shy last November.

But perhaps not for the reason you might think. Scheller now appears to be on the bandwagon that the GOP needs to provide more support for the no-excuse balloting favored more by their opponents. And she and Browning are willing to put their money where their mouth is to prove it.

The pair has created the “Win Again” political action committee because “conservative candidates across Pennsylvania lose because they can’t keep up with the Democrats’ mail-in advantage. We’re working to change that.”

The goal – to build a movement to revolutionize the way Republicans vote and win again in Pennsylvania.

The PAC held its first session with candidates and volunteers on Sunday.

“If you want to change policy, you have to be in office,” Browning told City & State. “To be in office, you have to win elections – and we are not winning elections. We’re not taking advantage of the tools that we have to win elections. So we need to change our approach.”

Arnaud Armstrong, another co-founder of the group who worked as a field organizer for the Trump campaign in Nevada in 2020, stated that Win Again’s goal is to build relationships with voters and Republican organizations to help encourage voters – especially those who aren’t frequent voters – to vote by mail.

“What we need to do is build the infrastructure that’s going to allow this to happen,” he said. “That’s going to require us to work – just like the Democrats do – with committees, candidates, activist organizations … any group that is working in some capacity or has an interest in electing Republican, conservative candidates … I use the anecdote: ‘The Democrats are on the field; they’re scoring points, while Republicans are in the locker room waiting for the game to start.’ And that just doesn’t work.”

Looking at last month’s primary for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, nearly 437,000 Democrats cast no-excuse mail ballots, while just over 119,000 GOP voters did the same.
