PA8: Cartwright Bests Bognet in Q3 Fundraising Haul

Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Lackawanna) maintained his fundraising advantage over GOP challenger Jim Bognet in the third quarter for the race in the 8th Congressional District.

Cartwright’s campaign raised just over $830,000 from the beginning of July to the end of September, while spending $1.93 million during this time period. His third quarter haul is a $225,000 improvement from the previous quarter, when the Lackawanna County Democrat raised $605,000 from the beginning of April to the end of June

The fourth term Democrat has now raised $3.04 million in the election cycle-to-date and entered October with $1.23 million cash on hand

Bognet, a former Trump administration appointee, raised $545,000 from the beginning of July to the end of September, while spending just under $400,000 during this time period. Bognet’s third quarter haul nearly doubled his second quarter when he raised $280,000 from the beginning of April to the end of June

The GOP challenger has now raised $1.1 million in the election cycle-to-date and entered October with just over $425,000 cash on hand

Cartwright won by close to 10 points in his previous bid over a self funding GOP businessman, John Chrin, who loaned his campaign over $1M during the 2018 campaign. Cartwright’s campaign raised $2.4M in the previous election cycle, with $1M of that coming from various joint fundraising committees.

A trio of national ratings outlets have the race graded in Cartwright’s favor, although each outlet provides it a different rating.

Inside Elections has the race listed Safe Democratic, while Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball has the race as Likely Democratic, and the Cook Political Report has it as Leans Democratic.

Cartwright is one of three Pennsylvania Democrats being targeted by the NRCC’s initial 2020 list, along with Reps. Conor Lamb (D-Allegheny) and Susan Wild (D-Lehigh).

  1. Bognet is a Trump ass-licker. Disgusting that Bognet would profess admiration for an orange moron, tax cheat, liar, and sexual predator like Trump.

  2. Bognet is a weak candidate at best. He knows his Trump talking points, but there’s nothing relatable or like able about the guy. Hell, he hasn’t even lived in NEPA for like 20 years. Too busy being a DC swamper working with Mitt Romney to worry about PA. He’s gonna lose and the Republicans will have Sweet Lou Barletta to thank for forcing this elite outsider on us.

  3. It just goes to show you what a joke being “targeted” by NRCC means these days or else Bognet had some inside pull to get the race “targeted.” Bognet’s candidacy was a farce from the start and it was made to look absurd but the Portland tv ad. Bad ideas topped with more bad ideas all leading nowhere. Chrin was a more serious candidate. But Bognet sure did raised a lot of money. I guess donor money has got to be spent somewhere.
