Philly Mayor’s Race: Domb, Gym With Deep Pockets Entering April

The Q1 campaign finance reports are in for the City of Philadelphia mayoral race and two candidates appear to have deeper pockets at this juncture than the others.

Real estate magnate Allan Domb has $1.73 million on hand with six weeks remaining in the chase for the Democratic nomination, while former City Councilmember Helen Gym is sitting on nearly $1.42 million.

Grocery store proprietor Jeff Brown led the way in fundraising, pulling in $1.2 million and adding an additional $800,000 to his coffers.

Three female candidates – Gym, former city controller Rebecca Rhynhart and ex-Councilmember Cherelle Parker – have shown the ability to raise money, each pulling in over $600,000 over the last three months.

Domb’s filing indicates his campaign has pocketed $2.595 million, but $2M of that total came from Domb’s real estate group.

Two other Democratic candidates – former Councilmembers Maria Quinones Sanchez and Derek Green – have each raised less than $215,000 in the quarter.

The only announced Republican in the race – David Oh – raised less than $15,000 and is sitting on nearly $110,000. His campaign finance filing did indicate that he is a candidate for city council, though, not mayor.

Four candidates who will appear on the ballot — state Rep. Amen Brown, retired Judge James DeLeon, Warren Bloom Sr., and Delscia Gray — did not file campaign finance reports by Tuesday night’s deadline.

  1. There is no front runner. Its anyones race.
The most qualified candidates have yet to make their strongest case.

And that’s not Gym, Domb (who’s showing real promise, but not quite there yet) or Brown (Jeff or Amen). Rhynhart is a huge disappointment as her communications skills fail her consistently.

The City is paying its closest attention to Cherelle Parker, Maria Quinones-Sanchez and Derek Green.

One of these three will get to sit in Room 215 in City Hall.

Its entirely up to them and their campaigns to ensure that they get to “Day One”.

The candidate forums have borne this out.

    1. Now only 2 of the three most qualified are in the race now…with Maria Quinones-Sanchez walking off of the stage..

So now, with the people watching closely; its down to Cherelle Parker and Derek Green.

Parker has the endorsements and Green has the small donors.

  2. Politicians should be elected based on the content of their brains, not their bank accounts.
