Turns out one of the primary talking points for Senate Democratic nominee Katie McGinty isn’t true.
As reported by Christopher Massie and Andrew Kaczynski of Buzzfeed, McGinty has been lying about being the first in her family to go to college.
“As the ninth of 10 kids and the first in my family to go to college, I’ve been privileged to live the American dream,” McGinty stated in an AP interview and many other times.
The issue is that her older brother John McGinty attended the Community College of Philadelphia from 1968 to 1970. He then transferred to, and graduated, from LaSalle University in 1973. He also apparently received his master’s in education from Temple University in 1978.
Katie McGinty entered St. Joseph’s University in 1981.
“As Katie has said, she was the first in her family to attend and graduate from a four-year college,” McGinty Campaign Spokesman Josh Levitt explained. “Her brother completed a two-year program then applied the credits to receive his bachelors.”
McGinty has started to qualify that she was the first to attend a “four-year college” but the earliest example of her doing so was last week, when she may have already realized that journalists and/or Republican opposition researchers had uncovered the information about John’s college records.
UPDATE: The McGinty campaign pointed out other times in the past where she has described being the first to attend a “four-year college”.
UPDATE 2: The McGinty campaign also sent the following statement from John McGinty:
“The way that Katie and our family have always talked about our experience is she was the first of the 10 McGinty kids to attend and graduate from a four-year college, straight out of high school. We were all really proud of that, just as we were proud that I earned my degree by completing a two-year program and then enrolling in La Salle. And we’re prouder still that Katie wants to actually do something about college costs and debt for families like ours – unlike our current senator, who voted to cut Pell grants and let interest on student debt double.”

Her explanation (in the update) does not address the issue. She said that she was the first to attend a four-year college. Her brother attended LaSalle, a four-year college. If she said that she was the first admitted as a freshman at a four-year college, I would give her that. But that’s not what she said.

I’m not much of a commenter on here, but when I saw you arguing that community college doesn’t count as college, I couldn’t help myself. How could someone who claims to be a liberal say that? Community colleges are great first steps for those wishing to gain a quality education who may not be able to afford a degree at a larger public or private institution. The cost of higher education is not going down – so we must invest in and end the stigma associated with community colleges so that those who wish to further their education may do so. Shame on you for saying such a narrow-minded statement.
I get and understand why politicians lie about many things, but what a stupid thing to falsify. I’m more inclined to NOT vote for her because she lied about such a stupid thing, than I was to vote FOR her if that was actually true.
