PA:3: Ryan Backs Out of the Race

Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District just lost another Democratic challenger: veteran Matt Ryan.

In less than two weeks, the Democratic field for PA-3 has seen two challengers bow out. Rob Joswiak cited family problems as the reason for his leaving the race, while Ryan’s Army commitments have led to his departure.

“Just as our elected officials have a duty to place the needs of their constituents above themselves, as a company commander I have a duty to put the needs of my soldiers above myself,” Ryan said in a statement.

Ryan remains a captain in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Which means that the lone Democratic challenger is the youthful Dan LaVallee, a Carnegie Mellon grad and a health insurance specialist. He is only 26 years old — a year above the minimum age requirement to run for a House seat.

LaVallee will challenge Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Butler), who is looking to win the seat for the third consecutive time.

Kelly has the advantage of being the incumbent and representing a Republican-leaning district. PA-3 sports a R+8 partisan voting index according to Cook Political Report.

That being said, Kelly had to defeat incumbent Kathy Dahlkemper, a Democrat, in 2011, although this was before a Republican-friendly redistricting.

PA-3 covers a large portion of Northwest Pennsylvania and includes Armstrong, Butler, Mercer and Crawford counties, as well as parts of Erie, Clarion and Lawrence counties.

  1. We need to get a Dem challenger out against Kelly in the 3rd dist NOW,

Making them have to start dwfending their seats NOW will slow them down in DC.
