Site Selection: PA #1 In New Corporate Facilities

corporate-facilityIn what may prove to be a big boost in his recent dismal ratings, PA Governor Tom Corbett announced earlier today that Site Selection magazine rated Pennsylvania the top state in the Northeast region of the U.S. for new corporate facilities for 2013.

The magazine specializes in economic development and corporate real estate. It listed Pennsylvania as having 348 new or expanded corporate facilities. The rankings are based on one of the following three criteria: a capital investment of at least $1 million, the creation of at least 50 new jobs or the addition of at least 20,000 square feet of space.

“We’re investing in energy, in our infrastructure, in education, and in our workforce to build a stronger Pennsylvania because it’s those assets that attract business investment and create jobs,” said Corbett.  “Every one of the 348 successful projects means new jobs and new opportunities for the people of Pennsylvania.”

In addition, Site Selection reported that Pennsylvania broke the top five list nationally, coming in at number four.

“With a clear mission of putting jobs first, we are sending a strong message to the nation and the world that businesses thrive in Pennsylvania,” said Corbett.

This shining moment for Corbett comes on the heels of a much dingier one, however.

Earlier this week, Philly.com posted an article on FactChecker’s report in regards to Corbett’s recently released radio ad stating that Corbett “created 150,000 new private sector jobs.” The web ad on his site boasts about the creation of over 141,000 private sector jobs, a feat that the ad calls “remarkable.”

Not so much, according to FactChecker’s statistics.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that during the time Corbett has been in office (from January 2011 up to December 2013), a net total of 138,000 private sector jobs were created. The numbers for December are projected, so when Corbett’s campaign looked everything over, they checked from January 2011 to November 2013 and came up with a net gain of 151,000 private sector jobs. So, that’s all well and done and accurate enough when you look at the numbers.

The “remarkable” comment gets put under a microscope when looking at the job growth from a national standpoint.

During Corbett’s time as governor, Pennsylvania’s rate of growth in the private sector was 2.8 percent. With that number, FactChecker said the state ranked 46 out of 50. Not only that, but this percentage is less than half the national average during that time period, 5.8 percent. The number one state in the country for private sector growth was North Dakota with an envy-inspiring 23 percent.

Of course, that’s only in relation to private sector jobs. Also during Corbett’s time, Pennsylvania lost a net total of 42,000 government jobs. In regards to all jobs, the state gained around 96,300. This particular rate of growth comes in at an even less impressive 1.7 percent during Corbett’s time in office, which places Pennsylvania at 47 out of 50 in the national ranking.

As an incumbent, Corbett is waiting to see which of seven Democratic candidates he’ll face off against in November: former Auditor General Jack Wagner, State Treasurer Rob McCord, former Secretary of Revenue Tom Wolf, Rep. Allyson Schwartz, former PA DEP Secretaries Katie McGinty and John Hanger, and Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz.

  1. And in other exciting news from Site Selector magazine, Gov. Tom Corbett has been selected for the cover of the upcoming swimsuit edition of the magazine!

  2. “We’re investing in energy, in our infrastructure, in education, and in our workforce to build a stronger Pennsylvania because it’s those assets that attract business investment and create jobs,” sez Tommy C.

“Then why are our employment numbers so dismal?” asks Tommy D.

  3. Site Selection Magazine? What is the readership of that in PA? Talk about inside Baseball! I bet most folks like me have never heard of the publication before today. If this is where Corbett’s crew is reaching for good news, they are truly done.
