National Journal Upgrades PA Senate Race

Smith, left, and Casey

Take that, New Jersey! With polls now showing just single digits separating Bob Casey from GOP challenger Tom Smith, Pennsylvania’s Senate race has jumped 3 spots in the National Journal’s ranking of competitive elections.

We’re now at number 16, up from 19 two weeks ago, right behind New Mexico. Lest Democrats fret, here is their write-up which is more than consoling to Casey fans:

PENNSYLVANIA (D, Sen. Robert Casey) (Last month: 19)
Two polls recently suggested businessman Tom Smith has cut into Casey’s lead by a serious margin. We don’t think Casey will end up running behind Obama, given Casey’s appeal to traditionally Democratic but culturally conservative voters in Coal Country, though. Casey is still a safe bet for reelection.

The Washington Post similarly upgraded the race last week.

In mid September, the folks at National Journal had the audacity to put Pa. behind the “Garden” State in their list.

  1. The race will come down to turnout in the SEPA suburbs and Southwestern Pa and of course the conservative vote rich “T”. If his money holds out and he makes the right kinds of outreaches in SEPA (Mr. Stoner, are you listening, you’re doing good work, rumor has it in SEPA, keep at it), Tom Smith could very well become the next Senator of the Commonwealth of Pa.

  2. Sen Casey underestimated the Farm Boy who did not go to college and who made millions by working, saving and investing.

I have heard that Tom Smith has, in fact, put another ten million into the campaign to expose Bob Casey’s record of big borrowing and big spending and total, total failure to pass a single bill.

In a recent email from the Casey campaign, Sen. Casey claims that “My opponent has pledged to spend $20 million of his own fortune to win this fall – and he’s already funded his campaign to the tune of at least $7 million worth of false ads attacking my record.”

  3. Casey is our employee. If, as an employer, you review and evaluate Casey’s record there is no way you can, in good conscience, continue to employ someone who has accomplished absolutely nothing during his tenure. Pennsylvanians have paid for one more Harry Reid/Nancy Pelosi puppet vs an aggressive representative who advocates on behalf of the citizens of PA.

  4. Wow. I’m really surprised Smith has moved up so close to Casey with a month left to go. I thought he would have a much harder time than Romney. I told you not to underestimate Smith. He did that in the primary race also (where I supported and volunteered for a different cadidate). He just came from nowhere.

  5. Umm…. with the voterID law overturned, they can move this race back to SAFELY DEMOCRAT for Casey.
