We continue our series on the candidates for the Pennsylvania State House with a look at Philadelphia’s northern suburbs.

Races To Watch

HD 142: Mark Moffa (D) vs. Joe Hogan (R)

Moffa, a managing editor of a publishing company, is pro-choice, wants to fully fund public education, and supports red flag laws and strengthening background checks and firearm safety training provisions.

Hogan, who worked for the late Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick, says he wants to reduce the gas tax burden, address the violent crime crisis, freeze property taxes for our seniors, and introduce a package of government reform bills to reign in cronyism.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: D+5.4

HD 143: Shelby Labs* (R) vs. Gwen Stoltz (D)

Labs is looking for her second term in Harrisburg. She is committed to holding the line on taxes, working to improve the healthcare system, and guaranteeing a quality education for children.

Stoltz, a research biochemist and scientific writer, wants to defend reproductive rights, supporting adequate and equitable funding of public schools, and fight for affordable and accessible healthcare and prescription drugs.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: R+4.7

HD 144: Todd Polinchock* (R) vs. Brian Munroe (D)

Polinchock is in search of his third term in the state House. He wants to ensure our schools are fully funded, freeze or eliminate property taxes for many seniors, and make healthcare more affordable.

Munroe, the Bucks County Clerk of Courts, is pro-choice and wants to expand access to healthcare.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: D+4.4

Other Contested Races

HD 18: Kathleen (K.C.) Tomlinson* (R) vs. Laurie Smith (D)

Tomlinson is looking for her second term in Harrisburg. She says she is committed to strengthening and funding our public schools, holding the line on taxes and keeping out dangerous Philadelphia-style politics

Smith, a public school teacher, replaced Kris Walski who was unopposed in the primary but withdrew. She wants to institute preventive measures to curb the opioid epidemic, protect abortion access, and increase state funding for schools.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: D+11.3

HD 29: Tim Brennan (D) vs. Diane Smith (R) vs. Rob Ronky (I)

Brennan, an attorney, is pro-choice and wants to protect education funding and supports limiting assault-style weapons.

Smith, a realtor, is committed to fostering greater educational opportunities, including trade school, and expanding access to quality healthcare.

Ronky would vote to keep PA Pro-choice, get PA open primaries, better background checks for gun ownership and along with all-day kindergarten.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: D+12.8

HD 31: Perry Warren* (D) vs. Bernie Sauer (R)

Warren has served in the state House since 2017. He supports full funding of public schools, ending gerrymandering, universal background checks and a woman’s right to choose.

Sauer, a small business owner, defeated Jennifer Spillane in the primary, 54-46. He wants to pass a Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights that limits spending, end the per diems and special perks for politicians, and limit the debt government can take on, as well as requiring voter ID.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: D+14.6

HD 141: Tina Davis* (D) vs. Kelly Bellerby-Allen (R) vs. Anthony Portillo (L)

Davis has served in Harrisburg since 2011. She has focused on continued economic development programs including job creation, pay equity, property tax reform, and programs assisting families and veterans.

Bellerby-Allen, a business owner, will advocate on investing in school choice initiatives and focus on finding revenue before increasing spending.

Portillo does not have an online profile we could find.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: D+19.2

HD 178: Kristin Marcell (R) vs. Ilya Breyman (D)

Marcell, a Council Rock school board member, says she will focus on investment, accountability, and choice to improve education for every child, as well as fight for taxpayers by working to pass a Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights that limits spending.

Breyman, CEO and cofounder of an education technology company, believes that women’s healthcare decisions should be made by women and their doctors, not by the courts or legislatures. He also wants to fight to bring the next generation of energy to Pennsylvania.

Dave’s Redistricting Partisan Lean: R+7.2
